Martin had a full and colourful life. Born in London but raised in his beloved Devon he was the only son of the Rev Alfred and his wife Rosa Langley: he had a sister, Ruby, five years his junior.
Martin served in both the Merchant and Royal Navy. It was during his training at Lancing College during the war that he met and married my Mother Ivy. He later went on to become a priest himself and before retirement spent time as a teacher.
Martin and Ivy had four children all girls. Rose, Rachel, Valerie and myself Brenda.Being a priest meant the family moved around but we finally settled here in Somerset close to his by this time ailing parents.
All four Daughters married and settled in the area and in time provided he and Ivy with twelve grand children and at the latest count they now have twenty two great grand children.
Martin is also a published author, for which he brought together two of his great loves Devon and the sea.

Well Dad tomorrow is your birthday you would have been 93. I write today as I may not have enough time to write all I want to say tomorrow due to work. I will not even be able to go to the bench as the cemetery will be closed before and after work. I miss you Dad, I miss being able to tell you about my life and have your thoughts to guide me. Not that I would have always taken your advice but your values were my earliest yardstick by which to measure mine. I have grown to have strong opinions that are in keeping with my world now which feels a long way from the world I grew up in. You were a strong influence on me in regard to airing my thoughts and ideas as you encouraged me at a time when many Dads would not have. You never belittled my arguments even when you must have thought I was wrong. I think you liked that I had a strong interest in the world and would question things rather than just accept. I hope you are now at peace and out of pain. God bless! I love you Dad.xxx

I wish I could hear all those stories again. I remember you would hold the family rapt with tales of your exploits as a child growing up and the war years. You were I am sure you would agree far from the perfect dad in so many ways. Even so, I love you Dad and I do have forgiveness in my heart. God bless! Toodle Pop!!
